THE BIG PICTURE
The Northern States have seen a substantial increase in the population of the Canada Goose in the past decade.  Large open areas such as public parks, golf courses, corporate campuses, schools, resorts, airports and private estates with grassy areas and a source of water provide a natural grazing and nesting habitat for these birds.  Once the geese have selected a property, they will settle into their nesting areas, pair up, build their nests and tend their eggs.  After goslings are born, the molting season begins and the geese will not leave until both adults and goslings are able to fly.  It is an endless cycle with various stages occurring through every season of the year.  The end result is fouled and unusable grounds, polluted ponds and streams and dissatisfied patrons.

THE PROBLEM
As with many other species of wildlife, the Canada Goose has coexisted with humans long enough to consider humans a nuisance, but not a threat.  They soon become acclimated to distress calls, scare cartridges, balloons, etc.  In addition, these birds are still considered a protected species in most areas of the country. Therefore, law prohibits any device that may harm or endanger them, such as filament line or Mylar tape.

THE SOLUTION

In order for Canada Geese to perceive a genuine threat to their safety, a natural predator must be introduced into their environment.  In this case, the predator is similar in size and movement to the arctic fox and coyote. It is known as the Border Collie.
SEACOAST GEESE CONTROL is dedicated to solving conflicts between Canada Geese and your safety and interest in the most humane way!
THE BORDER COLLIE
For over a century Border Collies have been bred for their intense and reliable herding instinct. It is a gentle breed that uses its predatory type stare or “eye” to threaten a flock to move while never inflicting injury. Their stare and stalking technique, in conjunction with their size and movement, pose a natural threat to the geese. A well-bred Border Collie will never bark or lunge at their flock. The Border Collie quietly stalks without disturbing humans or other wildlife in the area.  A well-trained Border Collie is completely devoted to its handler and awaits each command for direction, movement and speed. They are excellent swimmers and tireless workers which enables them to handle geese effectively both on land and in small bodies of water. At Seacoast Geese Control, (SGC) we breed, raise and train our own dogs in a loving home encouraging a sound, gentle and outgoing temperament. Their training consists of obedience, sheep and geese and pet therapy which produces a well rounded, friendly working dog.

THE PROCESS
SGC establishes a regimen of predator harassment consisting of a minimum of two visits a day with the number of working dogs
needed to accomplish the task.  Decoys and Flight Control (a grass treatment) are used when warranted. The coyote and fox decoys are far more effective when associated with a live predator, the Border Collie.  Since the Canada Goose will return to the same area where it hatched, our objective is to move incoming flocks and prevent them from nesting and laying their eggs. The repeated harassment causes fear and turmoil in the flock forcing them to find safer nesting grounds.  On average, SGC successfully eliminates problem geese within seven to ten days.  Preventative measures can be taken in order to discourage additional flocks.

OUR COMMITMENT
SGC will develop a site-specific Hazing Program geared to your special needs. All handlers are professional and their dogs well trained.  SGC is a member of the National Wildlife Control Operators Association (NWCOA) with complete coverage of Liability Insurance. The use of Border Collies for geese control is fully endorsed by numerous government and wildlife preservation agencies as safe and effective.  SGC adheres to all state and federal regulations.
